A Walk with Jango            oil on canvas   12" X 14"

Picture
I started "Family from the Back Series" for a number of reasons. It was less intimidating to begin painting the human figure from the back as I didn't have to worry about facial features. What is important, though, is not only proportion and anatomy, but to capture the person's identity even from behind. You really see this in the posture of my Mom in the first of the series in the blog below.  The slope of the shoulders, etc. tells the viewer that it is indeed my Mom.

When taking pictures of subjects while they are facing the camera, they often feel self-conscious and end up posing. But from the back they often don't know that they are being photographed (is this an invasion of privacy?).

In "A Walk", Jango, my handsome Rhodesian Ridgeback grand-nephew wants to take his Mom, Karen for a walk. While struggling with dog anatomy and foreshortening, I hope I've still captured his true character and playful manner as he clasps the leash in his front teeth.

My favourite part of this painting is not the walk ahead, but the steps that remain behind at the edge of the painting... faint reflections on the sidewalk.
